(reviewed 11/1/07)

1.   High school seniors who are unable to pass the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) may earn an Alternate Adult High School Diploma (AAHSD) by completing all of their high school course requirements and successfully passing the GED test.

2.   AAHSD candidates must provide documentation that they have completed at least twenty-five (25) hours of GED preparation, including instruction on the use of the calculator, in a Department of Postsecondary approved Adult Education program before they may be allowed to take the GED test.

3.   AAHSD candidates must present a copy of the letter from their parent or legal guardian granting permission for them to participate in the AAHSD program prior to their audit of Adult Education classes. The GED Online program should be the primary instructional methodology for audit by AAHSD candidates. However, AAHSD candidates may also be allowed to audit a local Adult Education class, if space permits.

4.   Neither the enrollment nor the attendance of AAHSD candidates may be reported to AAESAP or included in the National Reporting System (NRS) for Adult Education. Do not complete an AE enrollment form for AAHSD candidates. Do not allow AAHSD candidates to sign in or out on your regular AE sign-in/out sheets.

5.   Do maintain a separate set of attendance documents for any AAHSD candidates who audits your class. Do assess each AAHSD candidate using the full battery of TABE 7/8. Be sure to enter AAHSD on the TABE answer sheet in the space designated for school or program (along with your site).

6.   Administer the Official GED practice test to an AAHSD candidate who has completed at least twenty-five (25) hours of GED preparation. AAHSD candidates must achieve a standard score of not less than 410 on each of the five tests comprising the official GED practice test battery and an average standard score of not less than 450 before they are eligible to take the GED test.

7.   If the AAHSD candidate achieves the required minimum scores on the official GED practice test, record the number of hours the AAHSD candidate has attended your class and his/her official GED practice test scores on the AAHSD GED Test Approval Form. Complete the remainder of the form and sign your name at the bottom in the space designated for the signature of the certifying AE teacher.

8.   Give the original signed AAHSD GED Test Approval Form to the AAHSD candidate for them to deliver to the GED Examiner. Keep a copy of  the GED Test Approval Form, the candidate's attendance record and his/her GED practice test results on file in your classroom.
