| An adult learner is eligible to enroll in
an Adult Education class if they are: |
| |
4sixteen
(16) years of age or older |
| |
4not
enrolled in secondary school |
| |
4not
currently required to be enrolled in school |
| |
4perform
below the grade placement of 12.9 |
| |
|
| Individuals 16 and 17 years of age must
provide written evidence, such as a withdrawal form, verifying that they
are not enrolled in a public, church, or private secondary school.
Home-schooled students who have never enrolled in secondary school and
students who attended school in another state or county may provide as
evidence a letter from the public school superintendent responsible for
the education of students ion their current residential area, verifying
that they have not enrolled. Any enrolled adult education student who
subsequently enrolls in a public, church or private secondary school
becomes ineligible for continued adult education services. Verification
of eligibility must be submitted along with the enrollment form for all
16 and 17 year old students. |

| Definitions: |

|
| Church School |
Includes only such schools as offer instruction in
Grades K-12, or any combination thereof including the kindergarten,
elementary, or secondary level, and are operated as a ministry of a
local church, group of churches, denomination, and/or association of
churches on a nonprofit basis which do not receive any state or federal
funding. [Code of Alabama (1975), 16-28-1(2)] |

| Private School |
Includes only such schools that hold a
certificate issued by the State Superintendent of Education showing that
such school conforms to the following requirements: |

a. |
The instruction in such schools shall be by persons
holding certificates issued by the State Superintendent of Education. |

b. |
Instruction shall be offered in the several branches of
study required to be taught in the public schools of this state. |
| |
c. |
The English language shall be used in giving
instruction. |
| |
d. |
A register of attendance shall be kept which clearly
indicates every absence of each child from such school for a half-day or
more during each school day of the school year. [Code of Alabama (1975),
