Progress of I CAN Learn Educational Systems

A number of CACC faculty and staff members continue to devote hours to the implementation of the I CAN Learn system for developmental mathematics courses. We have covered much territory, literally and figuratively, since January 2004. I would like to update you about the most recent developments for preparing for fall classes.

First, we have provided several QEP roundtables during July. All have been well attended. These meetings have served as a forum for dissemination of information about the progress of the QEP and for asking questions of concern. Many potential problems have been addressed as a result of these meetings.

On July 13th, Steven Pace and Tammy Hovland from I CAN Learn Educational Systems came to Alabama to lead an implementation meeting. Again, potential problems were discussed, and details of the ICL program were presented. As a result, Ms. Hovland has forwarded copies of sample syllabi, lesson objectives, and other documents to assist us in implementing the ICL software.

On July 19th, James Blair, Elizabeth Mitchell, Sarah Scott, and I drafted a list of the lesson objectives for MTH 091, MTH 092, MTH 098, and MTH 100. The results are presented in color-coded table form and will be delivered to you this week. Please review this table and address any questions, suggestions, or comments to me or Mr. Blair, Ms. Mitchell, or Ms. Scott.

In addition, we have developed the standardized portion of syllabi for all developmental math courses. These syllabi are being printed, and you should receive a copy of each syllabus soon (hopefully this week). These samples should assist you in drafting your own course syllabi for fall.

Finally, additional copies of the ICL course workbook arrived today. The new edition of this book will be used for MTH 091, MTH 092, MTH 098, and MTH 100. All objective lessons are listed as part of the Table of Contents on pages iv – xv. You will be able to see the lessons associated with each of the objectives selected for the four courses listed above. If you have not received a copy of this workbook yet, I will try my best to get you one this week.

Thank you so much for all the additional hours so many of you have donated—especially the adjuncts who have sincerely gone that extra mile in paving the way to offer our students a new program of instruction. I am not a math teacher, but the more I work with the math folks in developing this program, the more I really wish I were a math teacher—I am so excited about the possibilities associated with ICL. I know there will be bumps along our journey, but I really do feel that this program will be very beneficial for our students.
