QEP Roundtable Discussion
September 23, 2004, 12:50 a.m.
Childersburg Campus, E-2

Present: Kim Manley, Trinity Sims, Robert McLeroy, Krystal Abbott, Kelli Tipton, Mitri Wilson, Debbie Martin, Meredith Sims, Cynthia Bates, Durell Morris, Lavonne Barclay, Amy Averette, Patricia Lett, Samantha Ezekiel, Becky Phillips (instructor), Barbara Anne Spears (accreditation liaison)

Spears met with this Math 098 class in the I CAN Learn® lab to discuss the QEP. She focused particularly on getting feedback from students on I CAN Learn®.

Students reported that they now enjoy the self-paced learning found in the I Can Learn® lab. They like the fact that they may come to the lab at times other than class time to complete additional lessons or study, but several reported that there are not enough open computers during other classes to accommodate students who wish to use them. Students noted that it is particularly important to have a live instructor in the classroom to work with students if they do not understand. Phillips is willing to meet with students immediately before class (which she did on this day) or after class in small groups or individually to work problems on the board or provide additional instruction. Students said they found this helpful.

Problems with the lab environment included limited workspace (because the book and notebook cover the computer monitor) and extreme glare on the glass covering the monitor at some workstations.

When asked about developmental English classes, students said they would like a self-paced class similar to the math classes. If English is not taught on a computer as math is, students would like to see tutorial lessons on computer and an open lab so that students may complete assignments.

Instructor inquired if hooks could be made available for earphones. The classroom earphones, which are available in case students forget to bring their own, are quickly becoming ragged because they are tossed about on the desk. Hooks on which to hang the earphones could alleviate this problem, she said. Spears agreed to report the problem to Laura Brown, division chair for transitional education.

Since students appeared eager to end the discussion and begin working on their math assignments, Spears ended the discussion. She asked students to continue providing feedback for the QEP by discussing with the instructor or sending written comments to Spears through the campus mail.

With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 1:10.
