Adult Education Program

Our Mission

The Adult Education (AE) and General Educational Development (GED) Testing Division assists Alabamians in achieving the basic skills and the credentials they need to be productive workers, family members, and citizens. The Adult Education Program provides free basic skills instruction in reading, writing, math, English language competency, GED Test preparation.

Adult Literacy

Adult literacy is a program of instruction designed for adults who have minimal or no skills in reading, writing, speaking, problem solving or computation.

Adult Basic Education

Instruction in adult basic education is designed for adults who lack competence in reading, writing, speaking, problem solving or computation at a level necessary to function in society, in the workplace or in the family.

Adult Secondary Education

(High School Options)/GED® Test Preparation

Adult secondary education/GED® test preparation provides instruction designed for adults who have some literacy skills and can function in everyday life but who are not proficient in reading, writing, speaking, problem solving or computation or do not have a high school credential.

GED Testing

Fees and Registration Each portion of the four-part test costs $30 for a total of $120. If you miss your appointment, the required advance-registration fee is not refundable.

English Language Acquisition

English Language Acquisition (formerly referred to as ESL) is instruction that assists individuals of limited English proficiency to achieve competence in the English language. Instruction is geared to adults who want to become more fluent in English, pass the U.S. citizenship test and/or GED® Test, and work on job-seeking skills.

Integrated English

Language/Civics Education (IELCE)

These services are provided to English language learners who are adults, including professionals with degrees or credentials in their home countries, and enable such adults to achieve competency in the English language and acquire the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens of the United States.

Family Literacy

Family literacy programs are designed to break the intergenerational cycle of under-education by providing opportunities for parents and their children to learn together.

College and Career Readiness

College-Readiness: The level of preparation a first-time college student needs to succeed in a credit-bearing course at a postsecondary institution.

Career-Readiness: The level of preparation a high school graduate (or high school equivalency graduate) needs to proceed to the next step in a chosen career pathway, whether that is postsecondary coursework, industry certification or entry into the workforce.

GED Preparation Classes

GED Preparation Classes

Get prepared to pass the GED by taking free classes with Central Alabama Community College division of Adult Learning. Classes are flexible and convenient to fit your busy schedule. The GED test costs $120 ($30 per section). Our students can earn GED test vouchers that will cover the cost for both the GED Ready Official Practice Test and the GED exam. Online classes are available now.

High School Diploma Options (HSO)

High School Diploma Options (HSO)

The Alabama Non-Traditional High School Diploma Option (HSO or HSDO) program is a partnership between Alabama Adult Education and the Alabama State Department of Education to provide students with an alternative to the GED high school equivalency.

  • It allows adult education students to earn a H.S. Diploma.
  • The diploma is issued by the high school or school district that the student last attended.

The program provides two options:

  • Option 1 – For an adult who attended an Alabama high school and earned enough credits to graduate, but did not pass the high school graduation exam.
  • Option 2 – For an adult who earned 10 or more credits from an Alabama high school and requires additional credits for high school completion.

Academic Assistance

If you are enrolled in or planning to attend college and would like some free tutoring, our Adult Learning program provides academic instruction in Reading, Math, and English. If you graduated from high school and preparing to take a college placement test spend some time receiving free academic instruction from one of our qualified Instructors.

Prep for Military Service

If you are preparing to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Batter (ASVAB) let us help you prepare. We can provide instruction to help you reach your desired score.

English Language Classes

If you need to improve your mastery of the English language enroll in our Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IEL/CE) course. This free course will provide instruction to improve your English skills in listening, speaking, and writing.

Employment/Career Training

If you are looking to update your employability skills enroll in one of our Career Pathway classes. Currently we are offering these Free Career Pathway classes:

Who can take the GED?

The eligibility requirements for GED testing include: Not graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate or diploma.
