Childersburg, AL — The ALICE Community Center successfully concluded its three-day “STEAM Up Your Summer” camp in early July at Central Alabama Community College’s Childersburg Campus. The camp provided high school students with hands-on exposure to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), while connecting these subjects to real-world careers and future opportunities.

“We want our young people to see that there are so many different opportunities available to them,” said Gerald Wallace, Founder and President of ALICE Community Center. “Bringing these experiences to Childersburg gives students a chance to try something new, meet professionals doing the work, and hopefully discover a path they may not have considered before.”

Participants engaged in a variety of career and technical education experiences at CACC’s Childersburg campus, including welding, precision machining, and industrial electronics.

“CACC is excited to be partnering with ALICE on this important project for two years now,” stated CACC President Jeff Lynn. “We look forward to continuing to create meaningful change in lives throughout our community.”

Students also attended a biomechanics workshop, explored architecture through design and engineering activities, and worked in teams on an event-planning challenge that involved developing concepts, creating budgets, and producing promotional materials.

“STEAM Up Your Summer was about making learning real,” added Ty Knight, Project Director of ALICE Community Center. “Whether students were welding, exploring biomechanics, learning about architecture and journalism, or building an event budget, we wanted them to see how the skills they learn today can connect to opportunities in their future.”

The camp reflects ALICE Community Center’s mission to expose young people in Childersburg and surrounding areas to opportunities beyond the traditional classroom and to help them connect education to college, career, and workforce pathways.
