What Is Distance Education?

Distance education courses are delivered partially or entirely online, allowing students to complete coursework outside of a traditional classroom setting. CACC offers a range of course formats to fit different learning styles and schedules, including fully online courses, hybrid courses that combine online and in-person instruction, and web-enhanced courses that use online tools to support classroom learning.

The primary forms of distance education courses are available at Central Alabama: virtual, traditional, hybrid online, hybrid classroom, asynchronous online.

  • Virtual courses are delivered synchronously to extend lectures and course activities to students remotely in real time. Virtual courses are held online at specific days and times and require students to use online conferencing tools to participate in learning activities. There are no requirements for on-campus activity. Identity verification will be required using the college’s approved verification process.
  • Traditional courses are delivered in-person at an approved instructional location on specified days and times. Students are expected to attend all scheduled meetings in person.
  • Hybrid Online courses require a combination of online and in-person activities, with more than 50% of the course content requiring online interaction. Some elements will have specified days, times, and locations when attendance is expected. Identity verification will be required using the college’s approved verification process.
  • Hybrid Classroom courses require a combination of online and in-person activities, with 50% or less of the course content requiring online interaction. Some elements will have specified days, times, and locations when attendance is expected. Identity verification will be required using the college’s approved verification process.
  • Asynchronous online courses are delivered asynchronously. There are no required face-to-face sessions within the course and no requirements for on-campus activity. Faculty interact with students through assignments, discussion posts, email, office hours and other electronic/virtual means. Identity verification will be required using the college’s approved verification process.

Technology Requirements for Distance Education Courses

Central Alabama Community College uses Honorlock as our College’s proctoring service. This is free for students. Students are not required to purchase the software and are not charged additional fees for this service. If your instructor requires the software, it will be stated in the course syllabus.

Honorlock Online Proctoring Requirements

Students are required to meet the following technology and equipment standards in order to use Honorlock for online proctoring:

  • Computer: A desktop or laptop computer running Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. Chromebooks are supported. Tablets and phones are not permitted.

  • Mobile Device: A mobile device to perform workspace scan.

  • Webcam: A built-in or external webcam to record the testing environment.

  • Microphone: A built-in or external microphone to capture audio during the exam.

  • Photo Identification: A valid school or government-issued photo ID for identity verification.

  • Browser: Google Chrome browser is required.

  • Extension: The Honorlock Chrome extension must be installed prior to the exam.

  • Internet Connection: A stable internet connection with a minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps and upload speed of 750 Kbps.

  2. Meet with an academic advisor to select courses that fit your program of study.
  3. Register for your distance education courses through your student portal.
  4. Access your courses through the college's learning management system once the term begins.
