GED Preparation Classes

GED Preparation classes provide a valuable second chance for individuals dedicated to enhancing their academic and personal development. Instruction is tailored to meet each learner’s unique needs and may include personalized tutoring or group-based learning. These classes are currently offered in Clay, Elmore, Shelby, Talladega, and Tallapoosa Counties.  All Alabama residents aged 18 and older are eligible to participate, provided they can show proof of residency and valid identification.  Out of School Youth that are 16-17 years of age may participate in the program with special documentation.

The GED® Exam

The GED® exam is a nationally recognized high school equivalency test delivered exclusively on the computer which provides a consistent testing experience nationwide and improved passing rates. Same-day scoring on all four parts is available, as well as a score report for reporting and remediation. Tests can be administered individually or as a group as selected by the candidate.  A GED® Passing Score of 145 is required in each of the four content areas: 

  • Math (115 minutes) – Quantitative & algebraic problem solving
  • Science (90 minutes) – Life science, physical science, earth and space science
  • Social Studies (70 minutes) – Civics and government, U.S. history, economics, geography, and the world
  • Reasoning Through Language Arts (150 minutes) – Ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written text.

Eligibility

The eligibility requirements for GED testing include:

  • Not graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate or diploma.
  • Not enrolled in a regular high school.
  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • If you are under 18, you must obtain an Approval to Test from the last high school attended (Exit Interview Form) or letter from the home schooled district in order to take GED test. A notarized letter from either parent stating they give permission for you to take the test must also be turned in.

Fees and Registration

  • The cost of the GED® test is $144 ($36 per subject); however, students enrolled in the Adult Education Program can test for FREE when they qualify for testing vouchers!
  • Same day registrations are NOT accepted.
  • Accommodations are available for those with proven physical, emotional and learning disabilities and must be requested in advance with appropriate documentation.
  • A valid Driver’s license, State Identification card, or any valid government issued photo identification is required for admittance to take the exam.
  • CACC administers the GED test monthly on certain TUESDAYS at the Childersburg campus and certain WEDNESDAYS at the Alexander City campus.  Check GED.com for availability.
  • The Childersburg Campus test center is in the Administration Building (Building A), Room 116.  Follow the signs to the exterior of the building.
  • The Alexander City Campus test center is in the Administration Building, 2nd floor, Room 212.
