Fourteen Central Alabama Community College students spent the day visiting residents at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, bringing conversation, gratitude, and a reminder of the power of small acts of kindness.

The group represented a true cross-section of the CACC community, including dual-enrollment and non-traditional students, members of the baseball and softball teams, chess club members, student ambassadors, and students who may not always have the opportunity to participate in student activities. Together, they made the trip to honor local veterans and share their appreciation for their service.

Thanks to generous donations from students, faculty, and staff across all four CACC locations, every resident received a personalized goody bag filled with items chosen to brighten their day. The veterans and staff welcomed the group warmly and expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the gifts.

CACC Dean of Students Cindy Entrekin praised the students for the way they carried themselves throughout the visit. “Our students represented the College with such pride and professionalism,” she said. “They were respectful, engaged, and genuinely moved by the opportunity to connect with the veterans. Experiences like this teach lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.”

Jamie Thornton, CACC Student Life Coordinator, shared a similar sentiment. “This event truly captured what student life at CACC is all about,” Thornton said. “It’s about bringing people together, creating connections, and finding ways to give back. Watching our students interact with the veterans was incredibly meaningful and inspiring.”

Throughout the day, CACC students demonstrated the character and compassion that define the college. They listened attentively to the veterans’ stories, shared laughter, and took time to connect on a personal level. The experience was meaningful for both the residents and the students who participated.

The visit was a reminder of the power of gratitude and community, reflecting CACC’s ongoing commitment to service learning and civic engagement.
